The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be going back and forth with their reported pursuit of a Pro Bowl tight end.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported on Thursday that Pittsburgh had been in contact with the Miami Dolphins about a potential trade for veteran tight end Jonnu Smith. Then on Tuesday, Schefter said the Steelers were no longer targeting Smith and were instead turning their focus to free-agent wide receiver Gabe Davis.
The trade chatter is now back on again. Schefter reported on Tuesday evening that the Steelers had “renewed conversations” with the Dolphins about Smith, who wants a new contract.
Smith is in the second of a two-year, $8.4M contract he signed with the Dolphins last offseason. He had a career year in 2024 and set franchise records for a tight end with 88 catches and 884 yards. Smith’s eight touchdown receptions also matched his career high.
Smith will turn 30 before the start of the upcoming season, so you can understand why he wants to cash in on his success from last year. This will likely be his final chance to sign a lucrative extension.
The Steelers traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason and could use another option in the passing game. Pat Freiermuth had 65 receptions for 653 yards and seven touchdowns last year and has been reliable, but Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Arthur Smith could definitely find a spot for Smith.
Of course, the big question is always asking price. Smith’s agent Drew Rosenhaus has said Smith wants to remain in Miami, so the Dolphins may not be all that motivated to trade the tight end.
