Novak Djokovic has shared his thoughts on the recent doping ban controversy surrounding Jannik Sinner, touching on what he found “strange” about the situation. His remarks come shortly after his organization, the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), issued a statement on the matter.

Sinner tested positive for the banned substance clostebol twice during the 2024 Indian Wells tournament. However, he escaped a ban after successfully arguing that the substance entered his system unintentionally through contamination from an over-the-counter spray used by his physiotherapist.

Initially cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), the World No. 1 later faced an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Following discussions, he accepted a three-month suspension, running from February 9 to May 4.

“We have seen the cases of Simona Halep and Tara Moore, and other players perhaps less known, who have had difficulties for years to resolve their cases, or who have been suspended for a long time. I think it is really time to do something and address the system because it is clear that the structure does not work like this,” he said.

During his press conference at the 2025 Qatar Open, Novak Djokovic shed light on the locker room atmosphere following Jannik Sinner’s doping ban. He revealed that after speaking with several players, many felt there was “favoritism” in how the Italian’s case was handled.

Djokovic said:

“I spoke with several players in the locker room, not only in the last few days but also in the previous months. Most of them are not satisfied with how the whole process has gone, and they don’t think it’s fair. Many of them believe there was favoritism.”

The 24-time Grand Slam champion added:

“We will see what happens in the near future, if the whole case will attract more attention and can shed light on other cases of lower-level players. And we have to keep in mind that Sinner and Swiatek, at the time, were No. 1 in the world.”

Djokovic will begin his singles campaign in Doha on February 18, facing Matteo Berrettini in the second round. Meanwhile, he has already kicked off his doubles run, partnering with Fernando Verdasco to secure a victory over Alexander Bublik and Karen Khachanov.
