UPDATE: Anthony Volpe has left the game after getting hit in the elbow by a pitch. It’s speculated to be precautionary with the Yankees up 7-1 in the fifth inning.

There may never be a proper opportunity for the New York Yankees to get appropriate revenge on Walker Buehler, who closed out the World Series against them in October to deliver another ring to the Los Angeles Dodgers. But Yankees fans will take anything they can get.

Even if it’s in the form of a random regular season beatdown. On Friday night in the Bronx, the Yankees welcomed the Red Sox to town for the first time in 2025, and Buehler was starting the opener. Not too long after the first pitch did Yankees fans get to direct their ire at him, though.

Just minutes into the game, Buehler was tagged for five earned runs on five hits and a walk. He was absolutely knocked around by the Yankees, who received a three-run homer from Jazz Chisholm Jr. and a two-run homer from Anthony Volpe.

It was especially brutal for Buehler, too. After Aaron Judge doubled to put runners on second and third with nobody out, the Red Sox right-hander got Cody Bellinger to line out before striking out Paul Goldschmidt. Only Chisholm stood in front of him as he looked to escape the jam. And he got him in an 0-2 count.

But Buehler hung a knuckle curve down in the zone and Chisholm went and got it, ripping one over the fence in center field. Honestly, a good pitch by Buehler. Just better hitting by Chisholm. That was a rocket.

Jasson Dominguez then singled before Volpe tattooed a fastball to the opposite field over the short porch. Buehler was back to nearly blowing a gasket like he did in Fenway a couple weeks ago when he was ejected for arguing balls and strikes.

That now gives Buehler an 8.64 ERA on the road this season. And for a brief moment there, Yankees fans were concerned about the former Dodger breathing fire in the Red Sox rotation alongside Garrett Crochet at the time of his signing. Not quite!

We obviously hate to potentially jinx ourselves because there have been many times the Yankees jumped on a starter early only to let him linger around for five more innings as the opposing offense chips away at the lead. But this time it feels right.

Will Warren is dealing so far and … oh, yeah, there you go: Chisholm drove in another run with an RBI single in the second after getting hosed by the home plate umpire (he called two balls strikes) and the Yankees extended their lead to 6-0. Buehler then hit Volpe with a pitch when the bases were loaded. It’s 7-0 Yanks and Buehler is at 67 pitches through two.

Yankee Stadium erupted with “a–hole!” chants directed at Buehler after the Volpe HBP. It’s getting rowdy.

Time to get cocky.
