Tagovailoa suffered another head injury during the 2024 NFL season. Head injuries have not been the only problem with him during his career, but he has also been injury prone as well. Miami missed the playoffs in 2024, and they are looking to get back in 2025. If they miss the playoffs, there will be questions about his future with the Dolphins.

Dan Graziano of ESPN.com had some major questions about some quarterbacks in the NFL entering the 2025 season. For the Dolphins, his question was, “Is this a make-or-break year for Tua Tagovailoa?”

He responded to his own question and said,

“Not really, since he has $54 million in guaranteed money coming in 2026. But the Miami offense took a step back last season, and the Dolphins missed the playoffs for the first time in three years under coach Mike McDaniel. Tagovailoa’s 60.3 QBR ranked 15th. How and whether Tagovailoa and McDaniel recover from a down year will go a long way toward determining how pointed next offseason’s questions will be about Tagovailoa.”

After the 2026 NFL season according to Spotrac, they could get out of his contract. It would be a dead cap of $34,800,000 if they were to release him before the 2027 NFL season. If not, then he won’t be a free agent until after the 2028 NFL season ends. Tagovailoa is 27 years old.

During the 2024 NFL season with Miami, he completed 72.9% of his passes for 2,867 yards, 19 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Tagovailoa will need to stay healthy in 2025 in order to make the playoffs in the AFC. If the Dolphins miss the playoffs, there is a chance that they could fire McDaniel as head coach. If he is fired, then the new regime may not want Tagovailoa as the quarterback for the long haul.
