A Baltimore man has pleaded guilty and was sentenced after flying a drone over M&T Bank Stadium during the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens Wild Card Game in January.

Alexis Perez Suarez was sentenced to one-year probation, 100 hours of community service, and a $500 fine after flying the drone over the stadium on January 11 when there was a temporary flight restriction.

Suarez’s actions led to a long delay in play after he flew an unregistered drone directly over the field of play in the third quarter of the game before the Steelers offense ran a play.

Suarez showed remorse in U.S. District Court and admitted to knowingly flying over national defense airspace.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles D. Austin accepted the plea. Austin said that he believes Suarez is on a ‘good path’ and incarceration for his actions was unnecessary.

It is common practice to temporarily ban drones and other aircraft from flying over the airspace of a sporting event to avoid bodily injury to fans, players, and other stadium personnel. The drone was tracked to Suarez after it was identified.

Suarez also admitted that the drone was unregistered and had no training to operate such an aircraft. He took multiple photos above the stadium before retreating out of the airspace.
