Shohei Ohtani has only made two pitching appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers this year, but he’s quickly reminding fans why he’s one of the greatest two-way players in baseball history.

Ohtani’s unique skill set was on full display during Sunday’s 13-7 rout of the Washington Nationals. He made his

second start of the year on the mound, tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts to open the game for the Dodgers.

The three-time MVP also served as Los Angeles’ DH and leadoff hitter, allowing him to make franchise history at the plate.

Ohtani had a monster day in the batter’s box, going 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run, three runs, five RBI and a walk during the series finale at Dodger Stadium.

With his two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, Ohtani tied a team record for most RBI by a pitcher in a single game, becoming the first Dodgers pitcher with five RBI in a game since Van Mungo in 1935.

According to Baseball-Reference, Ohtani became the fourth pitcher in franchise history with five RBI in a game, joining Mungo, Doc Scanlan (1910) and Frank Kitson (1901).

The five RBI were Ohtani’s second-most in a game this season, trailing only his two-homer, six-RBI performance against the Athletics on May 15. He now has 49 RBI on the season after leading the National League with 130 last year.

It’s been another banner year at the plate for the 30-year-old, who appears well on his way to winning his third straight MVP award and fourth overall. Entering play on Monday, Ohtani leads the NL in numerous offensive categories, including runs (76), homers (26), slugging percentage (.624), OPS (1.014), OPS+ (182) and total bases (191).

Throw in his contributions on the mound, and it’s clear why many consider him the best player in baseball.
