A father, a son, and a Shohei Ohtani home run; It was supposed to be a magical moment. But what happened next turned the celebration into heartbreak for a little kid.

During Sunday’s game against the Nationals, Ohtani launched a towering two-run shot into the stands. A fan reached up for the catch but dropped it. Confusion set in as the ball bounced back into play, and so did the tears.

At first, the umpires ruled it a double. But after a Crew Chief Review, the call was overturned and Ohtani was officially awarded a two-run home run.

While the umpires reviewed the play, broadcast cameras captured a heart-wrenching scene in the stands. A young boy sat beside his dad, who tried to catch the ball, crying as an embarrassed dad tried to comfort him.

On the field, it was another strong showing from Ohtani, who not only hit the two-run homer but also pitched a clean opening inning before being taken out after just 18 pitches. It was his second start on the mound since returning from injury, and the Dodgers continue to bring him along cautiously.

The Dodgers piled on with a huge sixth and seventh inning rally, capped by Max Muncy’s grand slam and Ohtani’s homer, ultimately defeating the Nationals 13-7 to take the series.

The high-flying Dodgers will now head to Colorado for a 3-game series, starting on Tuesday, June 24.
