Red Sox Pitcher’s Wife Reveals Disturbing DMs From Angry Gamblers

Red Sox Pitcher's Wife Reveals Disturbing DMs From Angry Gamblers - Heavy Sports

Garrett Whitlock is an important part of the Boston Red Sox bullpen. Unfortunately, that makes him a target when the Red Sox lose.

Whitlock has been the subject of scrutiny among the betting community, and his wife Jordan, unveiled some of the disturbing direct messages he received after picking up the loss in Boston’s 9-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.

Whitlock dropped his first decision of the season Monday after starting the year 5-0. He leads all Boston relievers in innings (40.0) and strikeouts (49) and is a huge factor with the Red Sox having the ninth-best bullpen ERA (3.51) in MLB this season.

Still, that has not spared him the wrath of bettors and frustrated Red Sox fans.

What Did People Say To Garrett Whitlock On Social Media?

That Whitlock has been one of the most effective Red Sox pitchers did not matter to those whose same-game parlays failed.

Whitlock had a rare blowup in the eighth inning, since the Angels tagged him for four runs in 1 2/3 innings. He walked three and allowed two hits, and Los Angeles turned a 5-5 game into its eventual 9-5 win.

Whitlock’s blowup came on the heels of starting pitcher Walker Buehler’s truly awful start, since he walked seven and allowed five runs in four innings while also surrendering an early 3-0 lead.

We don’t know for certain if Buehler became the fodder of losing sports bettors, but Jordan Whitlock shared what she saw on Instagram after the game.

“My under became over. I hope your son dies,” one disturbed fanatic shared, which was one of the few direct messages Jordan and Garrett received without profanity.

While outing the horrible comments that came in, Jordan also shed some light on her motives in doing so.

“I do not share this for pity, only to raise awareness,” she added in her Instagram story. “No one should have to deal with this in any work setting. Leave people’s families out of it. That line should not be crossed. This is not part of the game.”

Why Did Jordan Whitlock Defend Ketel Marte On Social Media?

Jordan Whitlock’s decision to share their DMs also was to designed to show support for Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Ketel Marte, who was visibly shaken when a 22-year-old fan in Chicago made disturbing comments about his late mother this week.

“Athletes are people too — not pieces you bet on and earn the right to taunt and degrade,” Whitlock shared with a picture of Marte being consoled by his Arizona teammates. “Imagine that’s your friend, spouse, son.”

The 22-year-old fan was reportedly apologetic and remorseful for his “inappropriate comments,” and he has since been banned by both MLB and the Chicago White Sox indefinitely.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo spoke about what Marte has gone through and his resilience in the face of this incident.

“He’s a remarkable young man. He’s incredibly strong, and last night was not easy for him,” Lovullo said, according to MLB.com. “We’re grateful for the support that the baseball world, the community, the fans of Arizona have given us.

“We’re ready to move on. I think that’s the best thing for everybody.”
