The run that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes finds himself on is nothing short of incredible. Mahomes already has three Super Bowl rings to his name something many great players never claim once.
But Mahomes’ excellence has been no flash in the pan or strike of luck. Rather, Mahomes and the Chiefs have carried the torch from the New England Patriots as the next great NFL dynasty, appearing in the last seven AFC Championship games and winning the AFC West each of the last nine seasons.
To question Mahomes greatness would simply be foolish. However, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger treaded that line on a recent episode of his podcast “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger.”
“Yes, I think Patrick Mahomes is phenomenal. He’s going to go down as, you know, another arguable goat. You know what I mean? There’s only like one goat, but there’s goats—the whole herd of goats,” he said.
“I would take Aaron (Rogers) in his prime over Patrick right now,” he said.
The eye test certainly showcases Rodgers’ brilliance from his prime years and he remains a cemented great at the quarterback position despite a whacky spiral over the last few years. Perhaps there is some success fatigue with regard to Mahomes’ accomplishments as well.
Regardless, Mahomes continues to make any argument against him all the more difficult with each passing season. Not even a decade into his career, Mahomes has earned a place at the table of legends with more room to add to a laundry list of accolades.
The success before and amid his prime is undeniable. One could perhaps squint and see some merit to where Roethlisberger’s coming from here. But it is still a difficult argument to make against Mahomes who may have even better days ahead which would be a scary sight for the rest of the league.
