Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray stunned the tennis world last weekend, announcing that the newly-retired Brit would begin coaching the world No. 7 during the off-season.

Murray will also be in Djokovic’s corner during the Australian Open as the Serb bids to win his 25th Grand Slam title and his 11th in Melbourne.

But Express Sport readers believe things won’t go to plan for the new player-coach duo, giving the old rivals a brutal reality check.

Less than four months after retiring, Murray is back in the professional tennis world, this time as a coach. The former world No. 1 has linked up with arguably his biggest rival.

Djokovic announced the news in a video posted to social media last Saturday, joking that Murray “never liked retirement anyway”. Both men sound keen to do well at the Australian Open – the Serb’s most successful Slam.

The current world No. 7 has won the Australian Open a record 10 times. And the rivals have plenty of memories in Melbourne Park as Djokovic beat Murray in four finals there.

Djokovic did not lift a Major title this season – the first time he’s gone Slam-less since 2017. By adding Murray into his camp, he will be hoping to end Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s reign at the biggest tournaments.

However, Express Sport readers don’t think the high-profile addition will help Djokovic achieve his goals Down Under. 63 per cent said Djokovic wouldn’t win the 2025 Australian Open with Murray as his coach.

That won’t stop them trying. The Serb recently said he wanted to go “full throttle” in the off-season and shared his plans to play a tournament in the first week of the 2025 season.

After hiring Murray as his new coach, Djokovic also said: “I am excited to have one of my greatest rivals on the same side of the net, as my coach.

“Looking forward to start of the season and competing in Australia alongside Andy with whom I have shared many exceptional moments on the Australian soil.”

The Brit added: “I’m going to be joining Novak’s team in the off season, helping him to prepare for the Australian Open.

“I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals.”

The final match of Rafael Nadal’s career was nothing short of emotional, not just for the tennis world but for his family and fans around the globe. While his on-court achievements and illustrious career have defined him as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, it was an unexpected moment involving his adorable son that stole the spotlight and melted hearts worldwide. As Nadal played in his emotional farewell match, it wasn’t just his powerful serve or incredible rally that captured attention—it was the sweet gesture of his young son, who brought a much-needed dose of warmth and joy to the occasion. The scene was one for the history books: Rafael Nadal, the King of Clay, who has given everything to the sport of tennis, was bidding farewell to his beloved career, surrounded by his family, friends, and millions of fans in the stands. Nadal, who had long been known for his fierce determination and passion for the game, entered his final match with a mix of emotions, knowing that this would be his last time competing at the highest level. But it wasn’t just the man in the spotlight who tugged at the heartstrings of the tennis world. As Nadal walked onto the court for his final moments as a professional player, the real show-stealer came in the form of his son, who was by his side throughout the match. Rafa’s little boy, who had only been a toddler when his father’s career began to wind down, became an unexpected symbol of the future and legacy of Nadal’s family. With his wide eyes and cheerful grin, the young child lightened the mood during such a poignant event, bringing a sense of innocence and pure love to a day filled with nostalgia and farewell. Rafa’s wife, Mery Perelló, also stood by his side, offering her support and love as the family navigated this emotional farewell. Together, they made sure that this final match would not just be about the end of a tennis career but about celebrating family, love, and the deep connection that binds them. Mery, who has been by Rafa’s side for years, witnessed her husband’s journey from an ambitious young tennis player to a global icon. It was clear that their family was deeply intertwined with this final moment, as Nadal was not just leaving behind his sport but stepping into the next chapter of his life as a father and a husband. During the match, there was a moment when Nadal looked over at his son, who was clapping and smiling enthusiastically from the sidelines. This small, yet meaningful gesture seemed to sum up everything that had brought Nadal to this point—his drive, his family, and his love for the game. As Nadal wiped away a tear, the crowd knew that this was more than just a final match; it was the culmination of a career that had brought immense joy and inspiration to millions. The young boy’s presence on the court seemed to symbolize the next generation, one that would carry on the legacy of his father’s greatness. But in that moment, as Rafa looked at his son, the tennis icon was no longer just the fierce competitor known for his unparalleled work ethic; he was a father, cherishing every second with his family, soaking in the significance of this milestone in his life. In interviews following the match, Nadal spoke candidly about his emotions. “It’s been an incredible journey, and today is bittersweet. But having my family here, especially my son, has made this moment even more special. Seeing him smile, watching him clap for me, that’s what truly matters. It’s not just about tennis anymore. It’s about family, about creating memories, and about looking forward to the future.” As the final point was played and the crowd erupted into applause, it was impossible to ignore the fact that, while Nadal’s professional tennis career had come to an end, a new chapter was just beginning for him as a father. The cutest moment in tennis history was when Nadal’s son, with his innocent eyes and joyous claps, reminded us all of what truly matters in life—love, family, and the legacy we leave behind. Mery, too, was moved by the moment, as she spoke about the importance of family in their lives. “We’ve always been a team, and to see Rafa have such an emotional moment with our son… it’s unforgettable. This is a new beginning for all of us, and I’m just so proud of everything Rafa has accomplished in his career. But seeing the way he is with our son, it’s clear that this is the most important chapter of his life.” The moment also showed the human side of Nadal that fans rarely see. While his fierce competitiveness on the court has made him a global icon, it’s moments like these that remind us of the warmth and tenderness that lie beneath the surface. It’s a side of Nadal that fans have come to appreciate even more in his retirement—one that emphasizes family, love, and the joy of life beyond the tennis court. As Nadal walked off the court for the final time, hand-in-hand with his family, the tennis world was left with more than just memories of his legendary career. They were left with the image of a loving father and husband, someone whose greatest achievement was not just the countless titles or records, but the love and legacy he has built with his family. Rafa Nadal may have bid farewell to tennis, but his journey as a father and husband is just beginning—and the future looks incredibly bright for this beloved icon.
