Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray stunned the tennis world last weekend, announcing that the newly-retired Brit would begin coaching the world No. 7 during the off-season.

Murray will also be in Djokovic’s corner during the Australian Open as the Serb bids to win his 25th Grand Slam title and his 11th in Melbourne.

But Express Sport readers believe things won’t go to plan for the new player-coach duo, giving the old rivals a brutal reality check.

Less than four months after retiring, Murray is back in the professional tennis world, this time as a coach. The former world No. 1 has linked up with arguably his biggest rival.

Djokovic announced the news in a video posted to social media last Saturday, joking that Murray “never liked retirement anyway”. Both men sound keen to do well at the Australian Open – the Serb’s most successful Slam.

The current world No. 7 has won the Australian Open a record 10 times. And the rivals have plenty of memories in Melbourne Park as Djokovic beat Murray in four finals there.

Djokovic did not lift a Major title this season – the first time he’s gone Slam-less since 2017. By adding Murray into his camp, he will be hoping to end Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s reign at the biggest tournaments.

However, Express Sport readers don’t think the high-profile addition will help Djokovic achieve his goals Down Under. 63 per cent said Djokovic wouldn’t win the 2025 Australian Open with Murray as his coach.

That won’t stop them trying. The Serb recently said he wanted to go “full throttle” in the off-season and shared his plans to play a tournament in the first week of the 2025 season.

After hiring Murray as his new coach, Djokovic also said: “I am excited to have one of my greatest rivals on the same side of the net, as my coach.

“Looking forward to start of the season and competing in Australia alongside Andy with whom I have shared many exceptional moments on the Australian soil.”

The Brit added: “I’m going to be joining Novak’s team in the off season, helping him to prepare for the Australian Open.

“I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals.”
