BREAKING: Dodgers could swing blockbuster trade to land $70 million All-Star closer

The Los Angeles Dodgers have already made some big signings in free agency this offseason. They could be a candidate to trade for one of the best relievers in Major League Baseball.

While listing teams that could trade for Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams, FanSided’s Eric Treuden noted the Dodgers have what it takes to pull off a deal to land him.

“Anytime the Dodgers have a need around their roster, they are guaranteed to have the resources to fill it properly. The reigning World Champions don’t have very many ways they need to upgrade their roster this offseason, but a look at their depth chart suggests they don’t have a true closer,” wrote Trueden.

Spotrac projects Williams to sign a five-year, $70 million deal in free agency after next season. However, just as the Brewers did with Josh Hader, they could trade him for prospects before he eventually walks. Williams is a two-time All-Star and two-time National League Trevor Hoffman Reliever of the Year.

Micheal Kopech and Evan Phillips were essentially the Dodgers’ closers last year. However, Williams eliminates any need for a closer-by-committee approach. Adding Williams could make the Dodgers bullpen truly elite, allowing Kopech to serve as a setup man.

“L.A. has the prospect depth needed to pull off a trade and the Brewers could even target someone who’s big-league ready like Wisconsinite Gavin Lux in talks,” wrote Treuden.

The Brewers would want a decent package from the Dodgers, but considering Williams has just one year left before free agency they may not get what they expect. Williams has a track record of postseason struggles and injuries, potentially lowering his trade value.
