Late in the first half of Sunday’s bout between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans, Jaguars signal-caller Trevor Lawrence got hit as he was trying to rush for a first down, not unlike how Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a head injury against the Buffalo Bills earlier this season.
The NFL world took to X and reacted to Lawrence going down with a Tagovailoa-like injury.
In an injury update that shouldn’t come as a shock, the Jaguars revealed that Lawrence has a concussion and thus will not make his return to the field against the Texans. He has been replaced in the lineup by Mac Jones, who spent his first three seasons playing for the storied New England Patriots franchise.
It’s currently unclear how long Jaguars fans should expect Lawrence to be out of the lineup. Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve following his concussion in Week 2 and missed four games, but it’s possible that Lawrence could return sooner if he clears concussion protocol.
Tagovailoa suffered his head injury on Sept. 12, and he didn’t make his return to the field for the Dolphins until well over one month later on Oct. 27. For reference, the Jaguars’ 2024 regular season will end in just over a month from now, as the team will wrap up its 17-game slate with a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on Jan. 5.
It’s incredibly unlikely at this juncture that the Jaguars will earn the right to play past the end of the regular season, considering the team sits at the very bottom of the AFC South standings at 2-9 with the outcome of Sunday’s contest not yet decided.
Considering that the Jaguars are seemingly out of the playoff picture with the season nearing its end, perhaps it’s in the best interest of Jacksonville’s future for the team to sit Lawrence for the remainder of the campaign. Jacksonville has invested a lot of money into the quarterback after all, as he signed a five-year, $275 million deal with the team prior to the start of the new season.
If Lawrence isn’t healthy enough to play for the Jaguars between now and the end of the season, hopefully he’ll be good to go for the beginning of the 2025 campaign.
