On a pretty intense Saturday, things went awry in at least three different games. The post-match dramatic moments at Ohio Stadium in Columbus had to be broken out by police, shockingly, using pepper spray.
An unranked Michigan Wolverines, one of the bitter rivals since the olden days, demolished the Ohio Buckeyes’ dreams of a Big Ten Championship game. The Wolverines, in the absence of their star tight end and cornerback survived the fierce test, winning 13-10. They extended their streak over the Buckeyes to four consecutive games with the win.
As with big wins, there were some pretty dramatic moments in Columbus. During the playing of Ohio’s alma mater song, a few Michigan players attempted to plant a Michigan flag in the center of the field. In order to break out the scuffle that ensued, Ohio Police unleashed pepper spray on the students. The action has since been condemned and called out by many – including Dallas Cowboys player Trevon Diggs.
On his X account, Diggs reacted to the incident in Columbus, Ohio. His reactions speak for a lot of people who are still baffled at the on-field actions.
The Ohio State University police issued a statement detailing the on-field altercation that required intervention from officers across multiple law enforcement agencies. The statement also confirmed that one officer sustained injuries and was transported for medical treatment. The Ohio State police further noted that the incident remains under investigation.
In addition to the player, a reporter from 97.1 The Fan, Stephanie Otey revealed that she also got hit on with the pepper spray. However, in a later follow-up message, Otey clarified that she’s alright while reflecting on the incident. She admitted being elated to experience such an event, noting that it’s a reporter’s dream to being on the sideline during such events.
What are Ohio State’s College Football Playoffs chances after the terrible loss?
The loss to Michigan Wolverines technically ended the Big Ten dreams of Ohio Buckeyes. In their place, Penn State Nittany Lions would take on the Oregon Ducks in the Championship game. However, all is not lost for the Buckeyes yet.
Despite tumbling out of the Top 5, Ohio State (10-2) still remain in the top 10 for the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes slid five spots to No. 7 after the 13-10 defeat to their rivals. Meanwhile, Oregon, the only undefeated team in college football, retained the No. 1 ranking, followed by Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, and Georgia. Oregon was the other team to defeat the Ohio State.
According to ESPN, Ohio State benefits from a safety net of “two top-10 wins against Penn State and Indiana” despite their 13-10 loss to the Wolverines. ESPN also noted that the Buckeyes “should remain ahead of Tennessee,” which has just one statement win against Alabama.
Ohio State could ideally remain ahead of No. 8 Tennessee, despite the Tennessee Volunteers’ win over Vanderbilt on Saturday. This ranking decision could have significant implications, potentially determining which team will host a first-round CFP matchup between the two.
