The phrase “Trust the process” used to mean something. Now, the quote is perceived as a joke. Although Steve Kerr hasn’t attempted the infamous tanking strategy, losing four in a row feels like a plummet to Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry. In a recent interview, Curry discouraged the idea of Kerr continuing his controversial 13-man rotation.
Naturally, it didn’t take long for Kerr to respond to his starting point guard’s disbelief in his contentious strategy.
“As soon as you lose, you’re going to have guys that are (expletive) off,” Kerr said. “I’ve been in their shoes. I used to be (expletive) off at my coach all the time when he didn’t play me. That was most of my career. This is how it is. It’s the NBA. It’s a competitive, vicious league. Four games ago, we’re on top of the world. Everybody’s happy. Now we’ve lost four in a row. Everybody’s (expletive).”
The Warriors’ 2024-25 season went downhill since De’Anthony Melton’s campaign ended due to an ACL injury. Golden State went 3-5 since losing Melton. In light of such a pivotal piece tore a hole in Kerr’s 13-man rotation, the fall from such a hot start seemed inevitable.
Although Kerr has a point about people living in the moment rather than understanding the road ahead and what could occur before reaching the destination, his 13-man rotation received skepticism from multiple highly respected basketball minds, including ESPN’s Tim Legler.
However, outside voices critiquing Kerr don’t hurt his plan, but without Curry’s buy-in, it’s plausible the 13-man rotation is living on borrowed time.
