The New York Yankees may turn away two veterans for a rookie in 2025.
Anthony Rizzo and Gleyber Torres were the main starters on the right side of their infield in 2024. Both players are free agents, and their return to the Bronx Bombers may be farfetched.
Jack Curry was on YES Network Monday night, discussing the Yankees’ offseason plans. He mentioned the two infielders and then said that the Bronx Bombers have “no plans” to sign either player. Curry then commented on one of the team’s prospects that may fill Torres’ role at second base.
“I don’t know how big his role will be in 2025, but I would bet you guys a dollar right now Caleb Durbin is on the opening day 26-man roster,” Curry said about the team’s possible future infield.
Durbin created buzz early in the offseason for his play during the Arizona Fall League. He set the league record with 29 stolen bases and Aaron Boone called him a “stud” after he set the record. The Yankees also selected him to the 40-man roster in order to avoid losing him in the Rule 5 Draft. Durbin’s path to the major leagues has never been clearer.
Durbin played 90 games in the Yankees’ minor league organization in 2024. He spent most of his time in AAA, playing 82 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The infielder had 10 home runs, 60 runs batted in, and 31 stolen bases while hitting .275 in the minors.
Durbin will turn 25 in February. He was with the Bronx Bombers for Spring Training in 2024 as a non-roster invite.
