If Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has his way, owner Jerry Jones won’t make the one big change that most are calling for.
The Cowboys (5-7) are entering the final stretch of an all-time forgettable season. They’re about to miss the postseason for the first time since 2020, and all hope was lost when Dak Prescott required season-ending surgery on his hamstring last month.
Most expect Jones to hire a new head coach, with Mike McCarthy’s contract set to expire after the season. But Prescott hopes Jones’ looming offseason of changes will not include a new head coach.
Speaking to Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports, Dak Prescott lobbied for Dallas to bring back McCarthy for a sixth season:
“I believe in him wholeheartedly. I don’t want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all obviously, but I think he definitely deserves a chance — another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. ‘On his terms’ may be a good way to say it. But I wholeheartedly believe in him.”
Prescott has put up his best numbers under McCarthy, but the lack of postseason success speaks for itself. Dallas is 1-3 in playoff games under McCarthy, and Prescott’s production cratered in the three losses.
McCarthy’s decision to bring in Mike Zimmer as the new defensive coordinator has backfired, too. They had the fifth-best scoring defense under Dan Quinn (he left for the Washington Commanders’ head coaching position) last year, but that number has fallen to 29th with Zimmer at the helm.
Winners of two straight, the Dak Prescott-less Cowboys will try to keep their late-season momentum going when they host the Cincinnati Bengals on “Monday Night Football” in Week 14.
Dak Prescott Needs A New Head Coach
A classy person like Prescott isn’t going to outright say that the Cowboys should move on from McCarthy. But it’s obvious that the 31-year-old signal-caller, like the rest of the team, would benefit from a new head coach.
Most NFL coaches don’t get this long of a leash unless their team is a consistent playoff contender. This will be McCarthy’s second losing season as head coach of the Cowboys, and his fourth without a playoff win.
