LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Taylor Swift has been crowned Spotify’s Global Top Artist of 2024, a title that acknowledges her 26.6 billion streams on the platform this year.
The announcement, made as a part of Spotify’s annual Wrapped release on Wednesday, December 4, quickly ignited discussions across social media, with fans and critics alike weighing in on the pop star’s latest achievement.
Internet split as Spotify crowns Taylor Swift global top artist of 2024
The honor, marked by the debut of a golden Wrapped badge on Taylor Swift’s Spotify profile, celebrates the ‘Blank Space’ hitmaker’s second consecutive year holding the title.
Spotify also rolled out celebratory features, including interactive Easter eggs hidden in Swift’s catalog, a Global Top Artist-themed AR friendship bracelet on Snapchat, personalized messages from the artist herself, and billboards across major cities.
Notably, Swift’s eleventh studio album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department,’ which was released in April, was the most streamed album on the platform this year.
Swifties were quick to celebrate the recognition, praising the achievement as a testament to her influence and consistent dominance. One wrote, “Artist of the century.”
Another fan celebrated the win as compensation for perceived losses to Beyonce, who was recently named Pop Star of the 21st Century by Billboard, noting, “MOTHER WAS ROBBED BY BEY BUT IT’S OKAY.”
“She is now officially the queen of spotify,” declared a fan, with one more saying, “She’s a whole moment.”
However, everyone wasn’t pleased with the accolade, as an individual wrote, “One of the most disappointing wrapped tbh kinda looks like 2023 ngl.”
Another remarked, “Her songs aren’t that good, stop listening to her people,” while one more expressed, “We need to honor her as the most mediocre artist of all time next.”
A Beyonce fan jobed, “Awwww swifties u hear that? u get a little sticker beyonce still number 1 pop star tho.” One critic simply wrote, “Overrated and saturated!”
Taylor Swift reaches new heights with Eras Tour book
Apart from her musical milestones, Taylor Swift’s debut book, ‘The Eras Tour Book’, which went on sale last week, has been making waves in the publishing world.
It sold 814,000 copies within its first two days of release, securing the second-highest weekly book sales ever tracked by Circana BookScan since 2001.
The only title to surpass it? Barack Obama’s ‘A Promised Land’, which sold 816,000 copies during its debut week in 2020, just 2,000 more than Swift’s book.
The release of the Eras Tour book was paired with exclusive ‘The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology’ vinyl and CD editions, which were launched through Target on Black Friday.
This non-traditional approach mirrors Swift’s innovative moves in the past, including last year’s collaboration with AMC to release ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ concert film, which grossed over $200 million and became the highest-earning concert movie in history.
