The Kansas City Chiefs are entering their Sunday night matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers (8-4) with an 11-1 record. The Chiefs clinched a playoff berth after their Week 13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 29.
Still, the Chiefs have much to improve upon before the playoffs. The offense hasn’t been consistently good. Kansas City’s 30-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 17 should have been a wake-up call for Patrick Mahomes and Co.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense could improve
The Chiefs rank No. 11 in the league in average points per game (24.1). Kansas City is also ranked 11th in margin, averaging winning by 4.5 points per game.
The Chiefs could use a boost on offense, and one former coordinator is back on the market. UCLA fired offensive coordinator Eric Beiniemy on Thursday. The former Kansas City offensive coordinator will be looking for his third job in as many years.
Andy Reid has been talking to a former assistant
Per Charles Goldman of A To Z Sports, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed he had been in contact with Bieniemy since he was fired by UCLA. However, he did not say whether the Chiefs were interested in Bieniemy rejoining the staff.
Via A To Z Sports:
“Chiefs HC Andy Reid on former OC Eric Bieniemy potentially rejoining the team after being let go by UCLA, says that he hasn’t really thought about it, but did talk to EB: “I had a chance to talk to him, but that’s a load to handle just in itself.”
Could Bieniemy join the Chiefs for the postseason?
Bieniemy won Super Bowls LIV and LVII with the Chiefs as their offensive coordinator. Reid has talked favorably about the 55-year-old offensive coach since he left Kansas City to take the Washington Commanders job before the 2023 season.
Bieniemy took the job in Washington hoping that success away from Reid and the Chiefs would help him land a head coaching job in the league. Washington averaged 19.4 points per game last season, which ranked 19th in the league. The Commanders fired head coach Ron Rivera after a 4-13 season. Bieniemy was not retained when new head coach Dan Quinn accepted the Commanders’ head coaching job in February.
There was speculation that Bieniemy could join the Chiefs staff for the playoffs in January. However, the Commanders chose to keep him on the staff, during the interim period before Quinn was hired, blocking him from joining Kansas City.
The Chiefs could add Bieniemy to their staff with no obstacle for this postseason.
