Tyreek Hill says Dolphins took field knowing season was essentially over if they didn’t score game-tying TD.

The Miami Dolphins came out on top against the New York Jets in overtime by a final score of 32-26 on Sunday, but the team was in grave danger of picking up its second consecutive loss heading into the fourth quarter of the contest. After all, the Dolphins were trailing by eight points at the end of three.

However, Miami scored with just over nine minutes to spare in regulation. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill scored a receiving touchdown, and fellow receiver Jaylen Waddle made good on a two-point conversion to tie the game up at 23 apiece.

Field goals from kickers Anders Carlson and Jason Sanders in the final minute of regulation set the stage for an overtime period, and Miami won the contest on a touchdown from tight end Jonnu Smith. Hill later admitted that as the Dolphins took the field for their touchdown drive in the fourth, they knew that their season would be all but over if they didn’t score.

The Dolphins might not have earned the much-needed victory if it weren’t for Hill’s offensive output. He totaled the most receiving yards of any player for Miami with 115 on 10 receptions.

Sunday marked Hill’s second game of the season with over 100 receiving yards. The 30-year-old hadn’t achieved such a feat since he accumulated a season-high 130 in the Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars back on Sept. 8.

Since the Dolphins avoided a disastrous loss to a lowly Jets team, the squad’s playoff hopes seem to still be very much alive. Miami is one win away from the .500 mark at 6-7 with four games remaining on its regular-season schedule, and three of those four contests will come against opponents that currently have more losses than wins on the season.

The Houston Texans are the best team that Miami will take on between now and the end of the 2024 regular season. The Texans are perched atop the AFC South standings with a record of 8-5 and won their most recent contest against the Jaguars on Dec. 1.

Following Miami’s Dec. 15 bout against Houston, the Dolphins will play the final three games of their regular season against the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and Jets.
