Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker is set to be placed on injured reserve with a left knee injury, which will cost him at minimum the next four games.
To replace Butker while he’s out, the Chiefs are signing Spencer Shrader off of the New York Jets’ practice squad, per a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Shrader signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent this past April. He was beat out by Matt Gay to make the Colts’ 53-man roster, but the Colts kept Shrader on their practice squad. When Gay suffered an injury, Shrader made his NFL debut in Week 1, connecting on all three of his extra point opportunities.
Gay returned in Week 2, and Indianapolis later released Shrader in Week 6. He then signed with the Jets’ practice squad, and was elevated to their 53-man roster for their Week 9 game against the Arizona Cardinals. Shrader hit both of his field goal attempts on the day, one from 25 yards and the other from 45.
It’s obviously a very small sample size, but it’s a bit encouraging that Shrader has made all of his kicks in the NFL. He will now be thrusted into the big-time with the 9-0 Chiefs, and if he performs well he shouldn’t have trouble finding more work elsewhere.
As for Kansas City, this is a big blow as Butker is arguably the best kicker in the league. If all goes to smoothly, he should return for the Chiefs’ Week 15 matchup against the Cleveland Browns. It is fortunate that he’ll be available for key late season games against the Houston Texans and Pittsburgh Steelers, and of course for the postseason.
