Justin Fields hasn’t taken a snap for the Pittsburgh Steelers since the end of the team’s 32-13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 6.
The Steelers named Russell Wilson the starting quarterback entering Week 7. Since, Pittsburgh has won three games in a row, including a 28-27 thriller over the Washington Commanders on Sunday at Northwest Stadium.
Head coach Mike Tomlin has teased the possibility that the offense will employ a package with Fields at some point this season. Pittsburgh could use the speed of the former first-round pick to stretch opposing defenses.
On Thursday, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith updated reporters on the Steelers’ plan with the fourth-year quarterback, per Nick Farabaugh of PennLive.com. Pittsburgh does have a package, but they’re being selective on when to use it.
“It’ll be ready to go when we need it,” Smith said. “Maybe it’ll be this Sunday, maybe it’ll be next Sunday. I’m very confident when we break it out, it will make a difference.”
Fields missed the Steelers contest against the New York Jets in Week 8 due to a hamstring injury. The former Ohio State standout was listed on the Week 10 injury report for the issue but was a full participant in practice last week. Pittsburgh took Fields off the injury report for their game against the Commanders, but he did not play.
Fields went 106-of-160 passing for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception through the first six weeks. He added 231 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.
